Frequently Asked Questions:
1. My child played an instrument but stopped at the end of 7th grade, can he/she join the freshmen band?
Yes! Freshmen band has a mixed group of students with all types of ability. Some students have been playing their instrument for four years, others for just two. No matter their experience, students will find a success in freshmen band. One thing I would certainly recommend is that students study privately if they are unable to take band in 8th grade. It will keep their musical minds active and their chops in shape.
2. What sort of commitments out of the school day is my child required to participate in?
All students are required to participate in the school pep band and parade band. As soon as freshmen students learn the pep band catalog they are asked to perform. Kennedy HS Bands only march in the memorial day parade. It is about a 2.5 hr time commitment on Memorial Day.
3. Should I purchase or use an instrument from the school?
This is a family decision that should be based on financial ability, whether the student is committed to four years of playing and their true desire to purchase a new instrument. Instruments from the school are in good working order. They are sent our for cleanings and repairs regularly. However, there comes a point where a student might outplay the instrument and necessitate a more intermediate/professional line instrument. When that time comes, please consult Mr. Avellaneda or your private teacher to make sure the new instrument is of good quality. Sadly, most instruments that are bought without consultation from a music teacher result in hundreds of dollars wasted in repairs. Instruments are investments!
4. What performance ensembles(bands) are available for my child to participate in?
All freshmen, regardless of ability, are placed into Repertory Band. After successfully completing one year in Repertory Band students may join Symphonic Band. They may also audition for Wind Ensemble, our top performing group. In addition, students may audition for the Kennedy HS Jazz Ensemble during the fall.
5. Can all instruments audition for jazz band?
Yes! However, students must be able to demonstrate proficiency in transposing their own part and playing their audition music. High School Jazz Band parts do not come with music for all instruments. Students will need to be able to do this on their own if they play a non-standard jazz instrument. (Clarinet, Flute, Horn etc.)
